A group of researchers and experts affiliated with the “Mediterranean Climate Change Experts” consortium presented a series of detailed findings on the challenges facing the Mediterranean region in recent years, highlighting the growing impacts of climate change on countries in the region, including Morocco.

In a report titled“The Interdependence of Climate Change and Ecosystems in the Mediterranean Basin,”experts emphasized that the region faces severe global challenges, including water scarcity, food insecurity, energy issues, and ecosystem degradation. The report explained that these issues are closely interlinked, necessitating a comprehensive approach to achieving sustainable development.

The Impact of Climate Change on Migration and Rural Development:The report highlighted that continued reliance on declining agricultural productivity in rural areas will lead to increased migration to cities, which will in turn increase dependence on food imports. The report also warned of the serious impacts of climate change on livelihoods in rural areas, particularly in Mediterranean countries, threatening the sustainability of agriculture as a primary source of income.

The Situation in Morocco:The report devoted a section to the challenges facing Morocco, noting that climate change has led to severe and recurring droughts, which have impacted social justice due to the loss of livestock and fodder. The report emphasized that agriculture, which accounted for 38% of employment in Morocco in 2012, faces ongoing challenges that affect the stability of rural communities.

The report also noted that industrialization in the agricultural sector in the southern Mediterranean, including Morocco, has primarily focused on export-oriented production, contributing between 15 and 20 percent of gross domestic product. However, the nature of agricultural work has changed, with rural workers becoming marginalized and earning meager wages.

Impact on Productivity and Work:Experts have warned that rising temperatures will lead to increased heat stress, which will negatively affect labor productivity. For example, Mediterranean Europe is expected to experience between 50 and 60 additional days of high heat by the 2080s, leading to significant losses in labor productivity.

Food Consumption Patterns and Resource Waste:The report examined the impact of urbanization and industrialization on food consumption patterns in the region, noting that dietary patterns have shifted toward a diet rich in energy and animal protein, leading to higher levels of food waste and an increased per capita food footprint. However, Morocco, Albania, and Jordan were exceptions to this trend.

The War in Ukraine and Its Impact on Food Security:The report noted that the war in Ukraine has had a significant impact on food availability in import-dependent countries, as Ukraine and Russia accounted for approximately 20% of Morocco’s total wheat imports, highlighting the fragility of food security in the region.

The Impact of Climate Change on Energy:The report revealed that the region’s energy sector has also been affected by climate change. In Morocco, energy production has declined significantly, with output in 2021 amounting to half of what it was in 2011 and one-third of the output recorded in 2010. Despite these challenges, the report commended Morocco’s ambitious strategies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, noting that the capacity factor for wind energy in Morocco reaches 45%, compared to 20% in Italy and France and 25% in Spain. As for solar photovoltaic energy, this factor stands at 35%.

The Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity:The report highlighted the impact of climate change on the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, where rising temperatures are disrupting the ecosystems on which the region’s unique flora and fauna depend.

Overall, the report emphasized the urgent need to adopt comprehensive and integrated strategies to address the multiple challenges posed by climate change in the Mediterranean region, with a focus on striking a balance between economic development and the conservation of environmental resources.
