Moroccan-Emirati relations are undergoing exceptional development, reflecting a renewed strategic partnership that focuses in particular on ensuring a green and sustainable future for Morocco and the region. This cooperation is evident in the implementation of major projects in the fields of water desalination, electricity transmission, and renewable energy, which form the cornerstone of both countries’ vision to promote sustainable development and achieve a low-carbon energy transition.

The Importance of Projects in Ensuring a Green Future

The seawater desalination projects in which the UAE is investing hundreds of millions of dollars are designed to meet the growing demand for clean water in Morocco, thereby supporting water security and strengthening the Kingdom’s ability to address the challenges of water scarcity in the face of climate change. Furthermore, the construction of desalination plants powered by renewable energy with a capacity of up to 900 million cubic meters annually ensures the provision of water suitable for agricultural and industrial use without harming the environment.

In the energy sector, cooperation focuses on developing solar and wind energy projects, with the UAE investing through major companies such as “TAQA” and “EMIA Power” in large-scale renewable energy plants with production capacities reaching thousands of megawatts, thereby boosting clean electricity generation and reducing reliance on polluting fossil fuels. This includes the development of advanced infrastructure for 1,400 kilometers of high-voltage power transmission lines to connect clean energy power plants in the southern regions to major cities, thereby supporting energy security and promoting regional energy integration.

A Comprehensive Vision for Promoting Sustainable Development

This cooperation is not limited to the economic sphere alone; rather, it is part of a comprehensive vision that strengthens Morocco’s position as an emerging regional player in North Africa and the Mediterranean, through:

    • Achieving a low-carbon energy transition supports global climate goals and reduces harmful emissions.
    • Enhancing water and energy security through desalination and renewable energy projects that ensure the sustainability of vital resources.
    • Transferring advanced technology to Morocco, thereby accelerating the development of industrial infrastructure and fostering innovation in the energy and industrial sectors.
    • Strengthening the economic partnership with the UAE, which is one of the largest Arab investors in Morocco, with investments exceeding $15 billion in various strategic projects.

    Tangible Results and Future Impacts

Thanks to this partnership, Morocco has been able to equip more than 900 villages with solar power, which has helped extend electricity access to rural areas and raise the electrification rate to nearly 100% by 2027. The new projects will also contribute to the production of 1,200 megawatts of clean electricity and the development of environmentally friendly natural gas power plants, thereby strengthening Morocco’s ability to meet its energy needs in a sustainable manner.

Moroccan-Emirati cooperation in the fields of water desalination and renewable energy serves as a leading model for Arab partnerships that combine economic development with environmental protection. These strategic projects are not merely financial investments; rather, they are an investment in a green future that ensures resource sustainability and preserves the environment, while strengthening Morocco’s position as a regional power in the fields of clean energy and sustainable development, with strong support from the UAE as a leading economic and strategic partner.
