The Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of the Kingdom of Morocco organized a national seminar on the circular economy today in Salé, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Local Governments for Sustainability (LGFS) network. The symposium aims to promote the concepts of the circular economy as part of Morocco’s sustainable development strategy, with a focus on sharing expertise and experiences among local and international stakeholders in this field.

This initiative is part of Morocco’s efforts toward energy transition and sustainable development, as the ministry seeks to stimulate the green economy and reduce waste by adopting circular economy practices that help conserve natural resources and achieve economic and social development in a sustainable manner.

The symposium saw broad participation from various sectors, including government agencies, international organizations, and local government networks, reflecting Morocco’s commitment to strengthening international and domestic cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and a successful energy transition.

The circular economy plays an active role in achieving sustainable development in Morocco through several key areas:

    1. The circular economy aims to reduce the consumption of natural resources by recycling materials and minimizing the need to extract raw materials, thereby preserving biodiversity and reducing environmental degradation.
    2. Reducing waste and pollution
By reusing and recycling materials, the circular economy helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and lower greenhouse gas emissions, thereby reducing environmental pollution.
    3. Boosting the Local Economy and Creating Jobs
promotes the circular economy by fostering industries based on recycling and environmental recovery, thereby creating new jobs and stimulating local economic growth, while also supporting small and emerging businesses specializing in this field.
    4. Supporting Innovation and Technology
drives the circular economy to adopt innovative solutions in product design and recycling technologies, while accelerating the digital transformation of industries, thereby enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in the markets.
    5. Achieving Environmental Sovereignty and Territorial and Social Justice
The circular economy serves as a strategic lever for Morocco to achieve environmental sovereignty and ensure the sustainability of natural resources, while promoting territorial and social justice, in line with the Kingdom’s new development model.
    6. Strengthening Cooperation and Partnerships
The success of the circular economy requires cooperation between the public and private sectors, the involvement of civil society, and the exchange of expertise with other countries to accelerate the adoption of circular practices.

Consequently, the circular economy represents a sustainable economic model that balances economic growth with environmental protection, and it is a strategic choice for Morocco to address environmental and economic challenges and achieve comprehensive and sustainable development for current and future generations.
